2010 Gone...2011 already?

You know how at the end of every year, they have the highlights of the year?  Well, I was thinking about my highlights & the only thing I could think of was acquiring our home & then having it flooded a few months later from the tornado/storm we had.

2011 is going to be a weird year for us. Here's why: my little sister graduates from high school, we will have been at our house for a year, my sis in law whom we haven't met is getting married so we will be traveling to TN, we want to rent a log cabin for Christmas/New Year's Eve, & I'm going to make a decision on baby#2. lol.  We'll see how all that turns out.

In the meantime, I'm still undecided about New Year's Eve celebration. I'm so worn out from Thanksgiving/Christmas & being sick for 2 weeks that I am not so sure I'll make it through New Year's & being up til midnight...God give me strength!

So, now you tell me:
  • What are your highlights of the year?
  • Anything you want to accomplish in 2011?
  • What are you doing to celebrate the New Year?

Common sense?

So, just a quick post before I start getting ready for work. By the way I'm freaking out since it is my first day. I hope everything goes well. Anyway, I wanted to share and article with you all about 8 First Aid Emergencies and Myths. I got the article via care2.com.

Pretty interesting stuff take a gander below and let me know if you knew all this stuff. The nose bleed one was where I was off. :)

Emergencies don’t come with warning bells. They strike at unexpected moments and your response, or lack thereof, could determine how things come out in the end. How much do you think you know about first aid and proper emergency response? Most people think they know quite a lot, but most of what they have learned consists of myths that could actually do more harm than good. Put yourself to the test and seriously ask yourself: what would I do in these situations?
1. A child pulls a pot of boiling water off the stove or sticks their hand on a hot burner.
Do you put butter or mayonnaise on the burn? Hurriedly remove the child’s clothing because it is stuck to the burn? Do you get out the ice? Those are the common reactions in the case of a burn, but all of them are myths. Butter, mayo, or other types of grease may cause even more damage to tender skin. Pulling clothing or other materials stuck to the burn could damage the tissue or pull the skin off completely.
The correct action is to rinse gently with cool water and coat the burn with antibiotic ointment. If the burn is on a sensitive area of the body such as the face or if there are a lot of blisters, then go to the ER and do not pop the blisters. You also want to seek medical assistance if a burn completely circles a limb or is larger than your hand.
2. Someone is having a seizure.
Do you move them? Do you hold them still? Do you force open their mouth with your finger or another object, or put something between their teeth? Do you simply watch them carefully and time the seizure? Again, most of these answers are common first aid mistakes that could lead to injury of the person seizing.
Prying the mouth open or moving them could lead to injuries such as muscle tears. The only reason they should be moved is if they are in an unsafe place and will likely fall off something and hurt themselves. Try to put them on their side and call 911. You may want to unbutton the top of their shirt or their belt to help them breathe and try to time the seizure activity. If the person is a known epileptic, emergency services only need to be called if it lasts for longer than five minutes. Never hold someone having a seizure unless you are preventing them from injury!
3. You sprain your ankle.
Is it ice or heat you use? Do you prop it up? Should you rush to the ER? This is a very common injury that many people blow off without seeking medical attention. In most cases that is okay, but you do need to know how to treat it and when to seek help. The biggest problem is remembering when to use ice and when to apply heat.
For an ankle sprain you want to apply ice. Heat will actually increase the swelling and could slow down the healing process. If it is painful to put any weight down on the foot then it may be a fracture and you should see a doctor.
4. You are bitten by a snake.
Do you rip off your shirt and wrap the wound? Suck out the poison and spit it on the ground? Get out your pocket knife and carefully cut the wound open so the poison can drain?
These are all myths that can actually be quite dangerous and lead to more injury than is actually necessary. If you cut the wound even slightly you may slice tendons or nerves that cause more damage. Tourniquets often lead to the blood circulation being cut off and could lead to the loss of a limb. The safest response is to immediately splint the wound or wrap it in something clean and get to the ER right away.
5. Your nose suddenly starts bleeding.
Should you lean forward and pinch your nose? Or tip your head all the way back so the blood cannot run out? More importantly, how do you know when it is serious enough to seek medical intervention? Nose bleeds are not always emergency situations, but they are the source of a major first aid myth. If you answered that you would lean forward and pinch the nose closed, you were actually correct. The myth is to tip your head all the way back so the blood cannot flow out, but this could be dangerous with a heavy nose bleed that doesn’t stop quickly. For a nose bleed, lean forward and pinch just underneath the bone. If the bleeding does not stop within five minutes seek medical attention.
6. Your three-year-old gets a hold of the Flintstones vitamins and eats the whole bottle.
Do you assume children’s vitamins are safe and they will just be really healthy for a few weeks? Do you grab the Ipecac from the bathroom and force vomiting? Do you simply run to the ER? In the case of vitamins, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. Children die every year from an overdose of iron and children’s vitamins are a main source of iron. For poisons in general, you want to keep the product that was swallowed and call poison control immediately. Depending on what was swallowed different actions will need to be taken, so you must remain calm enough to speak clearly and hear what you are instructed to do for the child.
It is now advised that all Ipecac be thrown out completely. It is no longer considered a safe medical intervention, as some poisons can actually be made worse by vomiting. Also, a patient vomiting can seriously interfere with treatment once they are at the hospital.
7. Someone starts to choke across the dinner table.
Do you jump behind them and do the Heimlich maneuver? Hand them their glass and encourage them to drink? Pat them lightly on the back? Your response to someone choking will depend on whether they are able to talk a little bit or if they cannot make any sound. If they are coughing violently and can speak a little, then it is a partial blockage. If they can only nod their head and/or are turning blue, then it is a full blockage that does require you to jump up and start thrusting upward around their stomach.
The Heimlich maneuver will force air up through the body and help dislodge whatever is choking the person, but only in the case of a full blockage. If some air is getting through, then encourage them to continue coughing and stay close by, but you do not need to take action unless they start to have breathing trouble or turn blue. Do not give them anything to drink, as the fluid will take up what little space is left for air to pass through. In most cases a partial blockage can be coughed out, but if it becomes a full blockage then once again the Heimlich maneuver will be necessary. Do not perform the Heimlich on a child less than a year old.
8. Your child suddenly has an extremely high fever.
Do you give them Tylenol and wrap them in a warm blanket to sweat it out? Rub them down with rubbing alcohol? Put them in a tub full of cold water? While there are traces of good advice in two of these options, none of them are the best route to take with a fever. The biggest myth is that rubbing a child’s chest or forehead with rubbing alcohol will break a fever. The child will actually breathe in the alcohol, and their young systems are extremely sensitive to this substance. It is not healthy for them.
While there may be some truth to the old wives tale of sweating out a fever, it is not a good thing to try with a child. Sudden high fevers can lead to febrile seizures, so putting them in a cool bath (not cold!) and giving them something like children’s Tylenol to break the fever (if they are old enough for medication) is a better course of action. If you cannot get the fever down or if it goes above 104 Fahrenheit, you should seek medical attention.
How many of these myths did you think were just standard first aid procedure? How many missteps might you have made if these things occurred in your home? Any of these things could happen and cause minor injuries that do not rise to the occasion of a true emergency, but you never know when something seriously tragic may happen. The ability to think on your feet and take the safest and most effective course of action is essential, especially in situations where you may be the only person around to help someone in need.

Christmas & Movies The Other Guys (B),Going the Distance(A),A-Team(A),Knight & Day(B)

Can you believe tomorrow is Christmas Eve already? This week flew by like you wouldn't believe! Maybe not for everyone but for me it has.  Probably b/c I've been super duper busy at work trying to get caught up from being sick last week plus preparing for the holidays & trying to be somewhat ready for next week.

YIKES! I really have gotten lots accomplished this week even though it may not seem like it. lol  It actually reminded me of the super busy days of my past, which I loved & somehow missed...yes, I'm crazy I know but I like being busy!

I think I should bust out with my handy dandy daily planner & write EVERYTHING I want to get done that day/week. I work better under pressure & when I see what I need to do. Otherwise, I rely on the Mexican side of me which pretty much leaves everything for tomorrow. That reminds me of my Mexicans & Americans: Cracking the Culture Code book that I love but that's a blog for another day!  ;)

Well, I leave you now with some movies you might want to watch over the holiday weekend:

The Other Guys-Funny parts you'll remember way after the movie is over so "let's aim for the bushes" lol Those of you who have watched it know what I'm talking about. lol This movie is an action comedy with Will Ferrel & Mark Walberg.  They play cops who, for whatever reason, haven't actually been out in the field. Will is an ex pimp turned accountant & Mark is an emotional mess. It's laugh out loud funny..."Bye Sheila!" lol

Going the Distance-Drew Barrymore & Justin Long are hilarious in this! The table preview scene with Cristina Applegate is only 1/2 the actual scene. You got to watch it to get it completely. lol Drew & Justin meet the day of his breakup with his girlfriend but neither is looking for a serious relationship...until they fall in love that is & Drew has to move from NY to CA. Since neither wants to be apart from each other, they decide to try the long distance relationship thing & they encounter lots of difficult moments along the way.  Very cute & romantic but very funny!

A-Team-full of action with a great cast!  A remake of course but still worth watching!  ;) For those who haven't seen the original it's about a bad ass* lol  military elite group of men who go out of their way to complete missions while remaining on the low down. Very good!

Knight & Day-I have to be honest & say that originally I didn't think this movie would be as great as it was. I still can't say it was the BEST Cruise/Diaz movie ever but it was funny as heck!  Mr. Cruise (Knight) plays an agent running away from THE LAW. lol He meets Diaz (Day) at the airport as he's about to board the plane. He tries to persuade her from going on the flight but things don't go as planned and she goes onboard the plane.  That's where things start to get interesting!  She has no clue what's going on at all & as the movie progresses, she goes through doubt/trust phases trying to guess Cruise's identity.

A Visit from St. Nicholas

Many know this story as "Twas the Night Before Christmas" by Clement Clarke Moore.  However, some argue that this poem had been recited by Henry Livingston earlier than Moore claims the poem was written. So, the question still remains, who really wrote the poem?

Don Foster, a literary detective who could trace the origin of writing styles set out to find out.  Both men have very different writing styles so judge for yourself.  I share Portrait by Clement Moore and The Hiding Place by Henry Livingston.

Now I leave you with the poem, A Visit from St. Nicholas:

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS
by Clement Clarke Moore or Henry Livingston

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,

Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

Eclipse

Hahaha, I wonder how many views our blog will get with that title??? :p Nope, this post has nothing to do with Twilight whatsoever. Sorry for the disappointment mattes! :P

No, this blog is about the lunar eclipse that there's gonna be tonight. It's gonna be visible to four continents, our being one of the better views. It's supposed to be visible at around 3:17am EST so that's about 1:17am az time. I screwed up earlier when I posted it onto my facebook and said it was gonna be at six am. I was sooo backwards but Greeny was kind enough to correct me. :P Anyway, it's supposed to be a special lunar eclipse because it will be the first time in hundreds of years that it falls on the winter solstice. Neat beans! :P

Holy cow it's Christmas time already??

I can't believe that it's going to be Christmas already!! The year just flew by, my birthday and all. lol Going back to the Christmas theme....is anyone else not in the Christmas spirit yet? I am certainly not in the Christmas spirit....it doesn't feel like Christmas time for me. Why?? I don't know....I think it has to do with having to work Christmas week and New Years week....welcome to the adult world Steph!!

On another note there are so many things that I am very thankful for this year.....among others I think having a job is something to really appreciate. I may have had my doubts earlier but I am warming up to it and gosh darn it even enjoying what I do....just a little bit. I am so thankful that I am alive and that my back is mostly back to it's normal functioning state, I am thankful for you guys my friends for continuing to be my friends....you ROCK!! I am thankful for my family, kooky or not they mean the world. I know this next year is going to be financially tough for my family and for many of us, but the only thing we can do is to keep on keeping on and continue to fight the good fight. Together we can get through this!

On a good note, not that the others were not good. I am sooo beyond ready to enjoy my 5 weeks of no school or homework....oh yes! Happy, happy , joy, joy!

So I wish you all a Merry Christmas and/or Happy Holidays and a New Year which ever it is that you may celebrate! Take care, be well, peace and may you spend it with those that you love the most!

Namaste,
Steph

PS: I don't ever think that my blogs have a consistent theme surrounding them even though I try to keep it to one theme it just continues to go off in a gazillion ways.....just a small glimpse of how my brain works.....yes, yes I am scatterbrained lol

Holiday Feasts

How do people tell their holiday feasts apart? In other words, what makes them different? I know most people stick to the traditional Thanksgiving dinner of Turkey with all the trimmings.  However, what do people normally do for Christmas? Turkey again? Duck? How about New Years?

Mexicans celebrate it with tamales, posole, menudo, etc. for Christmas so I'm curious as to what people eat for Christmas, please do tell...

Inception (B), Vampires Suck (C), Sorcerer's Apprentice (A)

I watched all 3 movies this weekend & below are the reviews:

Inception
Though I thought it was interesting, it does require you to pay very close attention to it because it's very easy to get lost. You know those movies where it goes back & forth between past/present/future?

This movie goes back & forth between different dreams. When you do watch it, make sure you keep track of who's dream is which. lol Talk about working your mind! lol

Vampires Suck
This movie had it's funny parts but I wouldn't say it's the best spoof ever! Also, they mixed parts of Twilight & New Moon. A good laugh out loud but not a keeper!

Sorcerer's Apprentice
This movie for sure took the cake this weekend! Action from the start, full of romance, comedy, & SCIENCE MAGIC!  Worth watching!

Shut yo' mouth!

I'm a day early with my post but who cares. :P

So, Care2 so far has posted two articles on Abstinence-only Education. I just finished reading/watching the second one and I was just like WTF? You have to watch the video first and then you'll probably understand what I'm talking about.

Transcript
Bear 1: What did you learn in abstinence-only class today?
Bear 2: Today we had a special lesson on relationships. The speaker told us a story about a prince and a maiden. A dragon is attacking the maiden’s home and the prince tries to slay it. The maiden suggests he use a rope instead of a sword. He does. He kills the dragon. Then another dragon attacks. The maiden suggests he use poison this time. He does. But he is mad about all the suggestions. He leaves the princess for another maiden who doesn't know anything about dragon slaying so we learned not to act like the first maiden because too many suggestions will drive a guy away.
Bear 1: I don't think I understand. Let's try this again. So the dragon is attacking?
Bear 2: Yes.
Bear 1: It is an emergency situation in a clearly dragon infested countryside.
Bear 2: Yes. So the princess shares her ideas about it.
Bear 1: That's right.
Bear 2: And the prince, he leaves her.
Bear 1: Yes. She ruined his confidence and made him feel ashamed.
Bear 2: By suggesting other ways killing dragons?
Bear 1: Yes.
Bear 2: What if she was just worried about his safety? What if she wanted to prevent damage to his sword? What if she had read some studies on the most effective dragon slaying methods?
Bear 1: We didn't really get into that.
Bear 2: Come to think of it, the maiden seems to know a lot about dragon slaying. Why couldn't she slay the dragon herself? And isn't she better off without the prince anyway if he is so threatened by her ideas? Did your class talk about that?
Bear 1: Not really. Just that he was happier with the other maiden.
Bear 2: Right, the girl who has no ideas.
Bear 1: None that she tells the prince anyway.
Bear 2: Did the prince talk to the first maiden about how her suggestions made him feel?
Bear 1: No he just went off with the other maiden.
Bear 2: And the lesson was that girls should learn not to share too many of their ideas because they will scare off princes?
Bear 1: That's what the speaker told us.
____________________________________________________________
If this is really being taught in schools and I had a daughter I'd be beyond pissed to find out this is what they were teaching her.
"No, no girls don't voice your opinions or make suggestions, guys don't like that."
Are you kidding me? This is sending one horrible freaken message don't ya think?

Why Christmas?

I've enjoyed the Christmas lights down Candy Cane Lane & the Klein's house more times this year than my entire life!  Partly because my son is now old enough to enjoy them...& he sure does!  He wants to go pretty much every night! lol  Anyway, I mentioned all this because Christmas used to be fun once upon a time and the magic of it all just sort of DIED!

I blame it on the fact that most parents now buy their kids pretty much whatever they want without thinking of their budget, quality, & use of the product they are buying.  Why buy kids high tech stuff when they will not TAKE CARE OF IT or the enthusiasm of the toy/gadget will die by next year & they will want the next best thing?  After all, why not focus on spreading the Christmas cheer to those who truly need it and showing your kids some appreciation for the things they do have along the way?

Isn't that what Christmas is all about...well, aside from celebrating the birth of CHRIST? Yes, I said it but people forget about that because they get so carried away with presents & politics. It would be less hectic, less stressful, more joyful, and more fun if we kept it simple. A dinner with family & a day full of fun! Maybe we should change the name from Christmas to Gift Day? lol I wonder how many people got ticked off over that comment...lol

By the way, does anyone know why it isn't just called Christ Day & why it's not on the right DATE?

Enjoy this YouTube Video of a holiday song I love:

The longer you stay alive the longer big bro is watching!

Here are two things that I read today that I found interesting:
(Title of blog is courtesy of The Booger, lol.)

1. A study done on mice suggests that by reactivating an enzyme called Telomerase can actually reverse premature ageing. For example, scientists engineered some mice that lacked the enzyme and those mice became prematurely decrepit but when the enzyme was replaced they bounced back to health. So of course there is some great intrigue in this new found study. Can you say fountain of youth?

Ah, but wait there's always a catch. While some scientist believe that there is a possibility that this processes can be used in humans, others believe that ramping up telomerase in humans can potentially cause the growth of tumors i.e. cancer.

I've only given you the gist of the article but if you want to read the whole thing check it out here:
Teleomerase reverses ageing process

2. So, this second article I read had already heard about a while ago when I was listening to NPR. This particular article touches upon the fact that there are websites out there that have been harvesting lists of sites that their users have previously visited online. According to the article it keeps track of every site that you've visited and complies a thorough profile on its users. Oh, and when I mean it keeps track of every site I mean every freaken site. It keeps track of news articles you may have read, where you do your online banking, even to the kind of kinky ass porn that some you all may look at.

I'm sure you guys have noticed how the the ads on some of the sites you go on magically know what kind of stuff to advertise to you. Like for me, usually when I'm a site that has ads the ads are almost always for makeup, Harry Potter stuff, and Zynga games. Ironic? Hell nah, I'm sure there's some profile out there on me somewhere.

Sure, this kind of online tracking can help advisers promote products that you'd be interested in, but come on this is getting a little freaken creepy. When ads start following you from site to site it's a bit off putting.

On another note what does it really matter that these sites have this schmuck's web browsing history? The most they get our of me is that I spend half my time on Youtube and the rest playing freaken Farmville or Frontierville. Oh what a life! But think about people who actually "matter"  ... e.g. politicians, movie stars, athletes. Imagine if all the shit they looked at got out??? Dun dun dun! LOL. Crazy times!

Next time you guys are on a site that runs ads look at them. Are they targeted towards you specifically? Kinda creepy right? Oh, and you if you don't want to take part in these websites reindeer games I suggest you download the latest version of Google Chrome or Safari. According to the article they have automatic protections for this kind of snooping. Good thing I had transfered over to Chrome a long time ago.

Eclipse new photos!

What do you think of the new photo to represent the honeymoon scene?

I'm undecided about it. I think it certainly makes me want to see more but at the same time, this can't be IT.  I know they can come up with a way better scene than that & still keeps it PG13!  Check out the 18 New on the Set Photos!

Gila Ridge Cheerleading Coach/Spyder

I'm sure many of you have heard all the commotion about the cheerleader coach having been in adult movies under the name Tiffany Price.  Frankly, I don't see how that has anything to do with her job as a coach & I wouldn't be concerned about her past. She hasn't broken any rules or done anything illegal & the fact that she has gone through all that would make her want to keep those cheerleaders protected rather than trying to convince them to join that lifestyle.

Well, I read in the paper that she appeared on America's Most Wanted for an episode on sex trafficking in the U.S. What caught my attention was the fact that she was trafficked by a guy named Spyder.  It made me wonder if it's the same Spyder hanging out in the Foothills area which the Sherriff Dept. has come to know as a "child molestation sex offender".  If that's the only label this guy has on him, I think parents & people here need to be aware of the fact that this guy is DANGEROUS!

Firecracker Green Beans

Here's a recipe that we've had many times before. We absolutely love it! However, this is our 1st year actually making it ourselves! So excited!  :)

  • 1 lb. Fresh Green Beans, ends pinched off. Use either the whole green bean, or snap in 1/2.
  • 1/2 cup to 1 cup diced onion
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon dried red pepper flakes
  • Salt
  • 2-3 strips of bacon

Fry the bacon, and reserve a tablespoon of grease to quickly stir fry (on high) the above ingredients. Do not overcook beans. They should be crisp.

You can also toss all the ingredients except bacon in a large pot, and boil for about 5 minutes, and drain the mixture. Don't use a colander with very large holes. You'll lose all the goodies. (If you use this method, fry the bacon, and set aside) Add bacon after.

Some Thanksgiving favs...

Sorry for not posting yesterday; family is here and so I didn't get a chance. Anyway, I have some Thanksgiving recipes to share with you all.

1) Alton Brown's Good Eats Roast Turkey- Holy hell this is an awesome recipe! Seriously! I've been using it for the last four years to prepare my turkey. I change up a few ingredients to vary the turkey each year, but keep the basics of the recipe.

You know how sometimes you cook a turkey and no matter how much basting you did it still came out sorta of dry? I remember my mom's turkey was sometimes like that. But then one year when she was like, "Nah, I don't feel like making Thanksgiving dinner." I was like, "WTH!?! We always celebrate Thanksgiving!" So, of course I took it upon myself to cook the entire dinner and with the help of the booger we have been doing this for the last couple of years.

So, now we always use Alton's turkey recipe. The first time I used it I didn't think it was gonna make a huge difference or that the turkey was gonna be super moist or anything. I thought it would be a small change, but you wouldn't freaken believe the difference! It was super moist and the left overs were freaken delicious!

The recipe takes a bit of work though because you have prep and brine overnight, but trust me it's way worth it. As Alton would say, "Your patience will be rewarded." So, if you don't have a recipe for your turkey yet I highly suggest this one. And if you don't believe me on how awesome the recipe is just go onto the original recipe on the Food Network site and read the hundreds of comments.

Side note: This recipe has been the number one recipe on the Food Network site for the past six years. How about them apples??? :P

Good Eats: Romancing the Bird -Playlist - For a more visual example here's the episode of Good Eats where Alton uses the recipe. It's the whole episode so if you want to skip background information (e.g. What the pilgrims and Native Americans ate at the first Thanksgiving) then skip to video two at around 6:50 in to start the recipe.

Alton Brown's Good Eats Roast Turkey

Ingredients

  • 1 (14 to 16 pound) frozen young turkey

For the brine:

  • 1 cup kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 gallon vegetable stock
  • 1 tablespoon black peppercorns
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons allspice berries
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped candied ginger
  • 1 gallon heavily iced water

For the aromatics:

  • 1 red apple, sliced
  • 1/2 onion, sliced
  • cinnamon stick
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 sprigs rosemary
  • 6 leaves sage
  • Canola oil

Directions

Click here to see how it's done.
2 to 3 days before roasting:
Begin thawing the turkey in the refrigerator or in a cooler kept at 38 degrees F.
Combine the vegetable stock, salt, brown sugar, peppercorns, allspice berries, and candied ginger in a large stockpot over medium-high heat. Stir occasionally to dissolve solids and bring to a boil. Then remove the brine from the heat, cool to room temperature, and refrigerate.
Early on the day or the night before you'd like to eat:
Combine the brine, water and ice in the 5-gallon bucket. Place the thawed turkey (with innards removed) breast side down in brine. If necessary, weigh down the bird to ensure it is fully immersed, cover, and refrigerate or set in cool area for 8 to 16 hours, turning the bird once half way through brining.
Preheat the oven to 500 degrees F. Remove the bird from brine and rinse inside and out with cold water. Discard the brine.
Place the bird on roasting rack inside a half sheet pan and pat dry with paper towels.
Combine the apple, onion, cinnamon stick, and 1 cup of water in a microwave safe dish and microwave on high for 5 minutes. Add steeped aromatics to the turkey's cavity along with the rosemary and sage. Tuck the wings underneath the bird and coat the skinliberally with canola oil.
Roast the turkey on lowest level of the oven at 500 degrees F for 30 minutes. Insert a probe thermometer into thickest part of the breast and reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees F. Set the thermometer alarm (if available) to 161 degrees F. A 14 to 16 pound bird should require a total of 2 to 2 1/2 hours of roasting. Let the turkey rest, loosely covered with foil or a large mixing bowl for 15 minutes before carving.

Sorry for the crappy pic. I used my phone
for the picture since it's from a recipe book.
2) Philadelphia 3-Step Midwest Cheesecake- Easiest cheesecake recipe ever and it's pretty darn good too! The recipes calls for whole strawberries to put on the cake, but unless all your strawberries are of the same size it's gonna look funky. I usually just slice my strawberries long wise and place them on the cake from the inside out; it makes a pretty flower looking design.

Philadelphia 3-Step Midwest Cheesecake
Prep Time- 10 minutes Bake Time - 40 minutes Makes 8 servings
2 Packages (8 ounces each) Philadelphia Cream Cheese, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
1 ready-to-use graham cracker crumb crust (6 ounces or 9 inch)
1/2 cup sour cream
3 cups whole strawberries, stems removed
2 tablespoons strawberry jelly, heated

Mix cream cheese, sugar and vanilla at medium speed with electric mixer until well blended. Add eggs; mix until blended.
Pour into crust.
Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 minutes or until center is almost set. Cool. Refrigerate 3 hours or overnight. Spread sour cream over cheese cake. Top with strawberries, stem side down. Drizzle with jelly.

I also have an apple pie recipe with a crunchy crumb top somewhere but I have to find it. I'll update once I find it. :) If you guys have some cool recipes it would cool if you shared them too. I'd share my mom's stuffing recipe if I knew how she made it. It's one of my favorite dishes, but she's the only one who makes it. Perhaps I'll get it out of her. :P

For the non-fanboys/girls

Repost from my personal blog
______________________________________________________________

So, I watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on midnight the day it came out and of course I loved it. What can I say I'm a nerdy HP fangirl. :P Anyway, for those of you who aren't quite as crazy about HP like me and are gonna watch the new movie, may I suggest a refresher "course"?

I have heard from a few people who didn't read the books and have only watched the previous movies that they were somewhat confused at the beginning of the new movie. Well, fret not my friends (wow that was nerdy) I have found you a quick five minute crash course. Check it out below and I hope you enjoy the new movie.

Peace off!
