Do you have the day off???

So today in America it's Columbus Day and most people have the day off. While I  doubt anyone actually celebrates Columbus Day other than just a "Woo whoo, I got a three day weekend!" I was wondering how many people know about the controversy of this day.

The other day on facebook my friend posted a video that I found to be interesting. It's about Reconsidering Columbus Day which truthfully I had never given a second thought to. Obviously because I hadn't contemplated the thought that well he did cause mayhem in the Americas.

Here's the video that she posted:

Plus here are some articles on the controversy:

What are your thoughts on this?

Some of the holidays I just don't get. This is one of them. I don't really care for having the day off since I never have had it.

I think we just plain out need to start over w/the holidays!

I had heard about this sometime ago....and honestly, I agree. I just always felt like he didn't contribute much. All he did was stumble across a piece of land which he claimed as his own....even though it belonged to someone else.

Yea I noticed that not alot of people had the day off, myself included. Alot of the elementary schools had classes, so did the college and almost everything was open with the exception of the high schools and federal agencies or whatnot.

I do think that having a recognized indigenous holiday would be amazing. Out of respect and celebration of all of the indigenous people that were here way before us.
