Nevermore

Today was Edgar Allan Poe's birthday. And usually on this day people gather at Poe's grave in Baltimore, Maryland to see if the Poe Toaster will show up. You may be asking yourself what the hell is a Poe Toaster. Well, it was the name given to this guy who since 1949 has paid an annual tribute to Poe's grave marker. This guy shows up in the wee hours of the morning each January 19 and leaves three roses and a partially-filled bottle of French cognac by the grave. Then he just walks off.

Well, the original guy who did this seems to have passed away in 1998 and so the duty was passed on to his son or so people think. Unfortunately, the toaster did not appear this year or last year. Tres sad, I know! There is speculation that this 60 year tradition has finally come to its end. It kinda sucks that the Poe Toaster is nevermore, but at least it does make for some awesome folklore since nobody really knew who this guy was. Had you guys ever heard of the Poe Toaster before?

I'm kinda sad too even though I had never even heard of him. :( Maybe 2009 was the last time he was supposed to have visited...
